Keep Cool!

Keep cool this summer with ice experiments! Your child can improve observation and questioning skills by freezing and melting ice. Begin by creating a spreadsheet to chart the different melting rate of ice cubes. Next you can have your child add water to an ice cube tray and setting it in the freezer. Ask your child how long it will take to freeze. For variety, use different levels of water in different sections of the tray. Set ice cubes on a table. Ask your child how long they will take to melt. Why do they melt? Place the ice cubes in different areas of the room. Do they melt faster in some places than in others? Why?

Squirter Scorecard

How do you get "Super Soaked" during the hot and muggy days of summer? As a family, look around your house and gather up all of the items that can squirt water. Water guns are always popular, but what about water bottles, or even empty condiment bottles such as those for mustard, relish, and ketchup? Once you have collected all of your devices, list them in a spreadsheet in column A. Now fill each of your containers with water. Outside on the driveway mark a "starting line" with chalk and find a measuring tape to use to measure the distance and width of the squirt. You are now ready to score your squirts! At the "starting line" give each device a squirt and then measure and record the length and width of each trial in your spreadsheet score card. Column B can hold the distance and Column C the width. After all of the data gathering is complete, take a look at your final results by creating a graph. Which device shoots the farthest? Do any shoot the same distance? What is the widest? Most narrow? What device surprised you the most? Why? Cool off your minds and bodies from all your hard work and finish up with a splashing and soaking water fight! You decide who gets to use the winning squirter!
