Go Green Activities

Technology integration goes green! Find activities, lessons, and projects that integrate environmental awareness, technology, literacy, and content standards. Each activity offers suggestions for implementation at K-2, 2-5 and 6-12 grade levels, as well as adaptations for use in different content areas.

Reduce: Paper Monitor Activity

for Grades 6-12

How is paper made? How can we conserve paper?

  • Create a brochure, podcast, blog entry, website to educate the community on the benefits and process of recycling paper. (Word processing, Podcasting, blogging, website design and authoring / NETS 2,3, 6)
  • Start a recycling program at your school. Create a network to connect your school to recycling facilities, information, and relevant community resources. (Social networking / NETS 2, 3, 6)
  • Use the Eco-Calculator widget to see how much energy is used to photocopy. Use the Zero Foot Print calculators to see how paper use ties in to their carbon footprint.
  • Gather data on paper consumption in your classroom or in different countries.
    • Graph this data.
    • Find ways to reduce your consumption.
    • Track your progress.
    • Compare and contrast consumption rates.
    • Alternately, gather data on the cost of paper consumption. Include information about water used, greenhouse gases emitted, energy use, chemical use, byproducts, etc.
    • Create graphs and charts to illustrate your findings.

  • Research how recycled wood and boxes are turned into paper.

This "Go Green" resource was developed by Buddy for an eco-education initiative, "Green Connections: Learning and Living." This initiative will run from February 1 through Earth Day on April 22, 2009.
