Hot Potatoes™ is Hot! Hot! Hot!

"Hot" is the word to describe this free software suite which offers great interactive tools for student use on the web. Hot Potatoes™, created by the Research and Development team at the University of Victoria Humanities Computing and Media Centre, allows the teacher to create interactive multiple-choice, short-answer, jumbled-sentence, crossword, matching/ordering and gap-fill type exercises. For example, the JQuiz has four question types, including multiple-choice and short-answer, or a mixture of those in an exercise. The questions can be weighted, and answers can be designated with a percentage of correctness. Once created, these interactive exercises are saved as web pages and can be posted on the web. Results are recorded and accessible to the teacher. The ability to integrate the Hot Potatoes into classroom Moodles™ or on a classroom webpage makes this a very useful tool to use with students of all ages. A great plus is that the download and its use are free for those working for publicly-funded, non-profit, educational institutions who make their exercise pages available on the web. Try creating one of these online exercises soon, and see how students find them both enjoyable and educational. Information available at Half-Baked Software, Inc.
