Videos at Your Fingertips

VOD (video on demand), one of the latest additions to an educator’s technology toolbox, provides students with anytime access to learning resources via the Internet or server. Various media formats (videos, still images, audio selections) are available for streaming into the classroom or individual computers to immerse students in a world of digital learning. This service can be provided by SAFARI Montage™, Discovery Education streaming (formerly United Streaming) and Learn360, a few of the more well-known delivery systems available to schools. Content is provided by a multitude of credited educational publishers such as PBS, Scholastic, National Geographic and NASA. Customizable administration settings allow the media to be navigated in a variety of ways including grade level, content area or correlation to state standards. Editing capability allows ease of use for both teachers and students. Different services are offered by each provider including content streamed through the Internet or content packages stored on a school’s server. Consider the ability to provide a Bill Nye video titled The Sun embedded into a lesson on the planets, a video on Wild Bill Hickok during a discussion about the old west in US history or a video lesson on integers to reinforce that concept. VOD furnishes another great tool for providing curriculum support in a digital format.
