The BackPack Experience!
by Rebecca Williams, Library Media Specialist

Benjamin Franklin Elementary School staff Ben Franklin Students with the BackPacksmembers, participated in the Buddy Backpack Project. Through their involvement they created backpacks that covered the range from preschool to middle school reading levels and included: videotapes, books on tape, fiction and non-fiction books, bookmarks and pamphlets with web sites and suggested family activities. Striving to make the backpacks enjoyable, parent feedback was collected through survey forms and an enclosed journal where they could leave notes, opinions or additional ideas. Families have added recipes, new web sites, or notes of appreciation in the log.

With the expert help of Mrs. Connie Feuquay in circulating the backpacks, students didn't have to wait too long for their turn to select a backpack to take home. The anticipation and wait time for selecting a backpack was eased through sibling communication and cooperation. When returned, each backpack is inventoried and lost materials are replaced.

Our “Backpack Experience" provided an opportunity for continued success in serving our families and encouraging literacy!
