A Learning Edventure for Students and Teachers

EdVenture Lab

Students at MSD of Decatur Township EdVenture Lab.
EdVenture Lab

This pilot site for the National Challenger Center for Space Science Education provides inquiry-based instruction combined with the use of multi-media technology. The innovative learning experiences, which address state and national standards, were developed by Lab Commanders (facilitators) who work in tandem with classroom teachers for instruction at appropriate times in the curriculum framework. Groups of inquisitive students explore problems and questions using wireless laptops, along with digital cameras, electronic microscopes and various probeware which enables them to collect data and analyze it. Students observe plasma screens around the room where important information is shared via computer or document camera by the Lab Commander. Additional resources, models and hands-on materials are available for students’ inquiry and research. Classes from various schools are transported to Lynwood Elementary, the lab site, where all the materials and equipment, and sometimes mess, are centrally located, for their learning experience.

During a lesson on erosion, 4th grade students learn about different types of erosion and observe pictures taken locally of each type. Working in teams, they build a model of one of the types of erosion and then hypothesize what they could do to stop it. Commander Jean Truesdell leads discussions throughout the lesson on what they have observed and recorded in their Science Notebooks. She asks the students to think about if their solutions are achievable and affordable. During a lesson one particular day, students share about seeing an eroding creek bank near their school while on a bus ride. They enthusiastically express possible solutions and make plans to write letters to build awareness and possibly solve the problem. The lesson continues with adding to their model their hypothesized solution for their project’s erosion problem. The excitement is over-whelming as the students test out their solution and then share their results with their classmates and teacher.

“Everything we do applies to real-world problems and solutions”, explains Jean. Additional lessons such as "Junk Food Junkies" and "Going Batty" use a combination of observing, hypothesizing, hands-on experimenting/modeling and sharing with others. These are the key components of all the lessons developed for the Lab.

The EdVenture lab not only engages students in the excitement of science, “it provides an opportunity for teachers to learn ways to not be afraid of science” shares Sue Keene, Lab Commander. She explains “I’m not only working with kids but modeling good technology integration for teachers. In this lab, teachers also see that, when kids are actively engaged in learning using technology, it deepens their understanding.” The resources of the lab are always available for teachers’ use back in their classrooms and the Lab Commanders are available to assist with follow-up activities there. Sue has found “the EdVenture Lab has become an important staff-development tool because not only does it offer standards-based lessons, but it also utilizes good instructional practices.” The EdVenture Lab provides an exciting and rewarding learning adventure for both students and teachers.
